Matthew 28:19-20: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The Great Commission is given clearly to all Christians by the Lord Jesus Christ and consists of four parts:
1. We are Commanded to Go
So many churches today are staying, instead of going. It is an obedient church that realizes the majority of ministry does not occur in the church house on Sunday, but in the world throughout the week as God gives us opportunities to witness! We preach and teach that we ought to make time for soul winning and seek opportunities to witness to the Lost!
Every ministry at Heritage Park Baptist is a witnessing ministry. We offer set times to go out visiting and will work with busy schedules to ensure every person has an opportunity to be involved in visitation.
We GO during the following times:
Thursday Evening Visitation: 7pm
Saturday Morning Visitation: 10am
2. We Must Teach the Lost the Gospel
We have a reason to go: II Corinthians 5:20 tells all believers that we are ambassadors for Christ. The world does not know the message of the Gospel; it is our duty to take the message to them! Every believer is tasked with preaching the Gospel to every creature through the vehicle of a local church, but every believer does not always know how to give it. In order to further equip the saints, we teach the saints how to witness over a three month period. We use a mixture of different programs to work with all skill and comfort levels!
a. We offer one-on-one instruction (same gender)
b. We provide hands-on experience
c. We have a place for every person who wants to obey the Lord!
3. We Must Baptize New Believers
Witnessing does not stop with leading a person to Christ; that person in turns needs to be taught the Bible and the true riches of the Lord Jesus! So often those people we do lead to the Lord never receive follow-up and discipleship; they flounder in the world without taking the most basic of first steps as a baby Christian
It is imperative that new converts start their walk correctly with the Lord. We work to follow-up with every new convert, as allowed, and lead them to obey the Lord in believer’s baptism. Baptism does not save, but is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and is a step of obedience to Christ!
4. We Must Teach New Believers
Not all new believers will be taught, but some will! Scripture states that a birthmark of salvation is a desire to learn the Word of God (I John 4:1-6). Discipleship is simply teaching the new believer (or anyone else who wants to learn) the truths of God’s Word! This is a forgotten aspect of soul winning, but needed to be obedient to the Lord!
Our church is has a culture of discipleship. Meaning, we are all learning together about the Lord Jesus through the Bible and must take the opportunities given to do so. The pastor to the pew is in a constant state of becoming more like Jesus; discipleship helps us grow.
a. We offer one-on-one discipleship (same gender)
b. We offer a discipleship partner that will pray with you and invest their life into yours
c. We offer practical, Bible-based lessons
d. We offer free materials and support
The purpose of The Great Commission is this: Going into all the world giving the gospel, while training the believer to obey Christ and give the gospel themselves; repeating the process
