Finding Soul Winning In Scripture

It has been said that the job of being a soul winner is not in the Bible. Using the language of the Bible for illustration: he that catcheth fish is rightly called a fisherman. He that farmeth the ground is rightly called a farmer. He that winneth souls can be rightly called a soul winner! (Proverbs 11:30)

It has been said that the word “soul winner” is not found in the Bible. Here are some other words you will not find in Scripture: Rapture, Bible, Trinity, or Demon. We use these words, because they are good, useful words that are widely used today and are clearly found and defined in Scripture. I would submit that the words “soul winner” are more clearly found in Scripture than even the words “demon” or “rapture”, based solely on the sentence structure and use of words (Proverbs 11:30). I would also submit that, just as the above words are clearly understood in Scripture, and it would be willful ignorance to refute them, the words “soul winner” are also clearly understood. The soul winner is seen in the following scriptures:

I. In The Speech Of Scripture

A. He is one that wins souls (through the preaching of the Gospel) (Proverbs 11:30)

B He is a fisher of men (Matthew 4:19)

C. He is a preacher of the Gospel (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15)

D. He is a witness of the Lord Jesus (Acts 1:8; 26:22-23)

E. He is one commissioned by the Lord Jesus with the Gospel (John 20:21)

F. He has been given the ministry of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:18-19)

G. He is an ambassador for the Lord Jesus (II Corinthians 5:20-21)

II. In The Actions In Scripture

A. The personal soul winning of the Lord Jesus (Nicodemus) (John 3)

B. The personal soul winning of the Lord Jesus (The woman at the well) (John 4)

C. The personal soul winning of the Lord Jesus (Zacchaeus) (Luke 19:1-10)

D. The preaching of Peter (Acts 2:14-47; 3:12-26; 4:8-20; 5:29-42)

E. The preaching of the church in general (Acts 5:42)

F. The preaching of Stephen (Acts 6:8-7:60)

G. The preaching of Philip (Acts 8:12)

H. The personal soul winning of Philip (Acts 8:26-40)

I. The personal soul winning of the Lord Jesus (Saul) (Acts 9:1-16)

J. The preaching of Saul (Paul) (Acts 9:20-22)

K. The personal soul winning of Paul (Acts 16:30-33)

L. The personal soul winning of Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:24-28)

This is by far not an exhaustive list concerning this subject. Nevertheless, look at the emphasis in Scripture on soul winning! A Christian cannot escape it, unless they willfully turn aside from it and tell the Lord Jesus that they will not obey it!

To do such a sinful act undermines the very purpose of your existence on Earth! If the believer had no purpose on Earth, but to get saved, the Lord God would whisk us away from this old, sinful world to Heaven in His infinite love. But, no, God has a purpose for every believer, and the first century church clearly understood it. This special purpose is to be an ambassador for the Lord Jesus Christ, as a citizen of Heaven, attempting to make men aware of the reconciliation available through Christ alone!

What a precious calling the believer has to be a faithful witness and win others to the Lord Jesus! What a wonderful God that would entrust such a precious message to sinful men to give to other sinners that they might be saved!
